In the metal industry there are mainly 3 types of manufacturing that Roll Forming competes with: Brake Forming, Extrusions and Stampings. Brake forming being less accurate but is an art form similar to Roll Forming.
Aluminum Extrusions and Stampings give close tolerances but with extrusions, Roll Forming becomes less costly in high volume and with stampings parts are shorter and die costs are enormous when getting even a few feet long. If you want lower prices and close tolerances, you should consider getting your parts Roll Formed.
At Johnson Bros. we continually pursue innovative techniques using R & D to produce parts we believe have not been made through Roll Forming before. Recently, we developed a Roll Forming technique to create a new type of U-Channel and J-Channel ring. Previously the channel rings would be rolled straight and bent inline vertically to produce legs pointing outside or legs pointing inside the channel ring. Now Johnson Bros. has developed the technique to form the channel and bend into rings vertically with legs pointing sideways. (See diagrams). With this capability we can now bend U-channel rings inline in any direction possible. Previously channel rings bent sideways would have to be stamped, spun or bent in a second day operation. Now we can offer the same capability at much less cost.
